All Natural DIY Baby Butt Balm

We used to use Aquaphor Balm for our boys. Both boys inherited our sensitive skin and if you have kids you know with disposable diapers comes a need for butt balm. Aquaphor was the only one that worked for the boys, but it’s steep price made me look elsewhere for a solution. I tried the generic brand at target and while it worked – sort of, it wasn’t thick enough. I used to use Grovia Magic Stick Diaper Ointment and it was awesome – but again, the price was a problem for us. I’d made some homemade body butter, and wondered if something similar wouldn’t work as a DIY baby butt balm. After all, coconut oil has antibacterial properties; and helps heal skin so maybe I could make my own.

I looked around Pinterest for some recipes to get an idea of what might work – and I stumbled on Premeditated Leftovers DIY Natural Baby Bottom Balm. This looked like something I could work with. I gathered my supplies and got to work. This is a super simple recipe, but in order to use it from a jar, you MUST whip it.

Ingredients:

All you need to do is melt the ingredients in a small saucepan. Pour into a large bowl and chill in the fridge till it’s almost solid. Whip with handmixer, or follow the instructions below to pour into a deodorant stick for a mess free version. Note: for this version you need TWO empty deodorant sticks.

What I ended up doing was reusing an old antiperspirant stick. You can buy empty ones for about a $1 a piece, but I wanted to do this cheaply. I washed and washed my old antiperspirant stick to get rid of any leftovers – I don’t want that junk on my baby’s butt. I took it apart as much as I could, soaked it, and scrubbed with an old toothbrush. I used a a toothpick and a butterknife to get in the crevices. I scrubbed it more. Once I was satisfied that it was clean, I set it to dry overnight.

I re-melted the beeswax mixture on medium-low heat in a small sauce pan with water about halfway up the jars. Once the coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax was melted, I poured it into the old antiperspirant stick to harden – being careful not to burn myself.

Now when it’s time to change the baby, I have DIY baby butt balm. No more messy fingers – and, it’s easily transportable. You probably don’t want to risk dropping a glass jar in a public bathroom. Instead, you’ve got a nifty butt balm stick. Let me know what you think!
